MLK Week at Madonna University




From January 15 through January 18, Madonna students spent Martin Luther King, Jr., week participating int the following service projects:

1. Writing postcards to legislators about current issues related to peace and social justice (17 participated)

2. Diversity mosaic (195 participated).

3. S.O.A.P. (20 participated).

4. Angela Hospice (7 participated)

5. Marywood (9 participated).

6. Montessori (8 participated).

7. St. Mary's Child Care (3 participated).

"This is the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Service Learning Director Djennin Casab. "At Madonna, we focus not just on what students will do for a living, but also on the people they're becoming. We hope they'll become citizens who care about their communities."

Young Emu-shu was out in the forest searching for his wolf pack. He had been separated when the farmers had fired on them for killing a sheep. Game for the wolves was diminishing as the farms increased in the area. The wolves had decided to risk going for the sheep. I enjoy campfires, especially when my friends and I tell spooky stories. One night, my friends and I were gathered around the campfire, and it was my turn to share a scary story. I quickly remembered a story Grandma once shared with me. I thought to myself that if this story had scared the wits out of me, it would also scare my friends. However, my scary story was not only a horror story, but there was a romantic twist to it, almost like Romeo and Juliet (love vs. paranormal). I began the story by sharing that these spirits watched over a girl named Sarah. They were called “legion.” What I mean by “legion” is that they came by the thousands.
